I have a 91 Gt with AOD and also have access to an 85 Capri with a 5 spd. I want to put the 5 speed in my Mustang but since I am a recent convert to Ford power I don't know much about the interchangeabilty. Would all the parts from the Mercury fit my stang? Please help, I desperatly want to row through the gears like all the other 'Stangers.

If you want a stick don't bother w/ a T5 go with the T56 6 speed then get a set of 3.73's or 4.11's If you go with a Viper spec T56 go w/ 4.30-4.88's. It's worth the added cost any T56 will handle alot more power than a T5 and a Viper spec will handle 700 h.p. on a daily driver load. But if drag racing is your cup of tea. don't bother w/ a stick unless it's clutchless. I figure you probly just want to haul ass on the street. If thats the case and auto is going to work out better if you just put a little bit of money into it. The down sides to the are the Aod's o.d. can only handle 400 h.p. and a C4 which will take almost any thing you throw at it (if built right) doesn't have an o.d., but it will rob less power than an AOD. And if it can't handle the power you want then there's the C6 stock gears in it will handle 1000 h.p. but once again no o.d. plus it weighs more and robs more power than a C4. So if you don't really need it don't bother. If I where you before I went looking at tranny's that can't handle as much power as the one you have I look to the aftermarket for a clutchless. Then you'll out row the other stangers.

Hello A couple of years ago I had a 81 capri. me and a friend took this a/c no opt 4cyl auto and made it into a 5.0 five speed with full opt exept the a/c using all 92 and 93 mustang parts. everything bolted right on. So i would asume it would work the other way. Plus thaey are both fox bodied fords. Ltd 2, cougar, thunderbird, fairmont, mark vii, and so on are all basicly the same cars and use the same drivetrain.
dukk

Rebuttal, the Capri has a 4 spd, will the parts still interchange. I found a t5 for $250 today. Will it fit and is that a good price?

The T5 will fit your stang no problem. All you need is the tranny, bellhousing, clutch, shifter, console plate, flywheel, manual tranny starter, clutch pedal assembly from another stang, all the little clutch stuff like cable ect, and a new crossmember to fit for the manual. Your stock driveshaft should fit, but now would be the time for an alluminum one. As far as computer keep the auto one it will keep the timing in between shifts. $250 for a T5 is good, but chances are it is a 4 banger T5 (at that price). Which a stock motor will break. Try going to http://www.stangparts.com they are a salvage yard and they sell conversion kits fairly cheap. W/o all the hassle of finding all the parts.

It should fit. You may have to change the bell housing too, but not real sure.

You should take a look at the April 2002 Car Craft. There they have an article about proshifting stock trannies and information about other aftermarket trannies. According to that article you can proshift 3rd-5th on that T5 for $264 Which is $50 cheaper than new OEM gears. And chances are the weak ass 3rd gear is toothless if that T5 is only $250. So you will probly need to replace 3rd and 4th then because they shared a common slider. An other thing you should do to that tranny is get rid of the 3.35 first gear and replace it with a 2.95 first gear. That will keep the rpms in your power band. An stop second gear from being sluggish. Then for fifth gear you should get rid of the .67 o.d. and get a .80 o.d. This will allow you to use 3.73 gears and still retain top speed capabilities. You be better of w/ 3.73's in .80 o.d. than 3.08's in fourth. Fifth at .67 is useless for any thing but gasmileage. Or if your an all out drag racing man the .80 will allow you to run 4.10's for fast 60 ft. & 1/8 mile times and get your mph up for the quarter. I reccomend this for drag racing too. Because for a street cars rpm range you will use up those 4.10's before the quarter is up. Even with mods they will eventually slow you down unless you run a really tall tire. As far as gasmilage 3.73's w/ a .80 o.d. will improve you city mileage because you actually get to use the o.d. The 4.10's you will probly stay about the same in the city. But your highway mileage will decrease thats why I first reccomended the T56 because it has two o.d.'s .79 or .80 (depending on specs) in fifth for performance and .50 or .62 (depending on specs) in sixth for fuel economy. But if you want all out gear rowing performance on a T5 you will need to model the gear ratio's after the T56 which has 2.97 first .80 fifth. the other ratios are about the same. My opinion on the T5 is get the 2.95 first and .80 o.d. proshift 3rd through 5th so you aren't stuck replacing 3rd and 4th all the time when you soup up the engines. Use 3.73 gears in the rear then you will have the ratio to acclerate fast, but the .80 o.d. will still allow good top speed for late nights on the highway or road races. And don't worry about gasmileage you didn't buy a 5 L. engine for fuel economy. If you wanted enonomy and a stang you can always pick up a 2.3 L. real cheap to drive to work.
