I just got my '91 Tbird SC about a month ago. I love it but it has an oil leak in either the heads or in the rear main seal (my mechanic couldn't tell). He said that I could get a re-manufactured engine for about $2400. I figure, if I am going to replace the engine, I might as well replace the trany at the same time. I am playing with the idea of switching the trany over to a 5-speed instead of the auto that is it. I am wondering if anyone has done this before and how does it cost? I have never done anything like this before. Any help that anyone can give would be appreciated.

Thanks, Cort

Listen if u have a rear main seal leak ur engine isnt shot. Its not that bad to replace. Dont listen him if he cant tell if your head gasket is blown or you have rear main seal leaking. Truts me i just replaced the rear main seal on my 85 elan and its only got 25,649 miles on it. But if you want to replace it with new its all u. Well on the trany part sorry dont mess with them.

My car has 126K miles on it though. I was going to wait for about a year to replace the engine and I figure by that time, it will have about 130K miles on it. I don't have any of the tools to do any of the work myslef. My mechanic said that if it was both heads and the rear main seal, it would cost me about $1300 to replace them all. So I just figured why not put that money towards to new engine? How can I find out for sure where my oil leak is? If I can get by with only a few hundred dollars to fix just the heads or whatever, that would be a lot better. But I think that I am going to replace the engine eventually anyway. What do you think I should do? Should I save my money for the new engine and fix all of my problems with it at once (including any future problems that hasn't came up yet)? Or should I just replace the seals and call it good? I am just not sure what to do at all. I don't know that much about cars, as far as fixing them, but I have friends that do. I need a lot of advise...

Cort

I meant that it will have 140K miles on it after a year.
