I've had the same problem as WWatson2 with ticking lifters on my '96 GT.
I've noticed the problem when the car was barely 3 yrs old.  I only notice it
when I first start the car, though.  After the engine gets up to temp it goes
away.  Is this a problem with Gen 2 Probes?  I find that it's unusual that
both the four cyclinder and the V6 would share the problem.

I've heard both engines do it. What oil do you run?

From what i know all mazda built engines have problems with ticking lifters or HLA's.. the usual problem with the HLA's on 4 cyls is that it is primarily caused by a faulty designed oil pump causing areation of the oil and causing it to tick.. the v6 and I4 has problems where its usually caused by dirty oil.. the oil passages on the HLA's get gummed up or blocked then it doesnt get oil and causes zero lash.. thus ticking.. eventually if the ticking continues for long intervals it can wear cam lobes then the ticking isnt going to improve and replacement is necessary.. You said that the oil pump is causing areation of the oil. My car ticks really bad, but i put Lucas oil treatment in it and the ticking usually stops for probaly 30 miles of driving, then starts back up. Do you think getting a new oil pump would stop the leak? Josh

Yes the oil pump is causing areation of the oil... thats what causing the ticking.... im guessing after putting in the oil treament it probably makes the oil just a little bit thicker.. so its harder for the oil pump to introduce air... im pretty sure that putting in the redesigned oil pump should solve your ticking problem.. remember the oil pump prob is for the 4cyl not six.. if the oil pump is replaced and ticking happens again its more than likely dirty oil/sludge buildup and preventing the hla's from getting the oil it needs.. u may want to try an engine flush then see if they still tick.. if it does then possibly one or more of the hla's have collapsed...and need replacement.. Try and check out www.probetalk.com and try to find more info there or if u have the time search arond for bryan pendelton's website.. it had the service bullitin regarding the oil pump on his site.. Hope ive helped and cleared thigns up.. just mail me if u need any more info.. Eugene 94 PSE

My car just resumed ticking this year, now that it is warm out again (4 degrees C here in Ontario today). The oil must be a little thinner with the warmer temps, and more air is getting mixed into it at the pump. How much is a retrofit pump kit? Where do you get them?
