If you have a ticking noise from the top end (valves) of your engine, try flushing your engine. Drain old oil and replace filter. Try to use Motorcraft filter. With new filter in place, add 2 quarts of Havoline ATF DEX III or IV, & 2 quarts Havoline 10w30 motor oil. Run engine hot idle for 10 to 15 minutes. DO NOT operate car on road with ATF. Shut engine down, drain ATF completely, and replace with new oil filter. Add 4 quarts of Mobil 1 extreme synthetic motor oil. Use this oil for about 1,000 miles then use your regular motor oil. You don't have to use synthetic oil for everyday use unless your racing motocross or drive a 250 hp 4 cylinder engine. If you rather use other brand oil, oil filter, or syntec oil, be my guest. This is what I did to my 1995 2.0 SE, and 11K miles later, still no ticking. And NO I will not be responsible for any repairs or damages. Use your best judgment when making repairs to your Probe. As you may know, Probe parts are not economy priced.

I have to strongly disagree with you on the use of sythetic oil. If you can afford the use of systhetic lubricants I would recommend it to anyone, as in the long run your engine may thank you. The best opportunity to use synthetic is in short commute cars. This is were pertroleum based oil are at their worst, because of the short commutes, the oil does not have time to properly heat up and loosen debris and trash from settling in "nicks" and "crannies". The bottom line is petroleum based oil slunges up, settles, and other wise leaves contaminants and other byproducts in you engine over time. We have not even got into the considerably lower viscosities found in synthetics. As for the flushing procedure you recommended, it is often (any engine flushing procedure) useful on older engines or engines with short commute miles on it, but a car using sythenic oil would not have to be subject to engine flushing. The very reason you use the flushes is to combat the problems associated with petroleum base oils described above. As for whoever was concerned about there 97 Probe with 11,000 miles on it ticking. I assure you that a flush will not solve your problem. You have a "virgin" engine. Probably clean enough to eat flat-jacks off of. I would look into getting Ford to replace your oil pump quick, while it is under warranty. I am currently persuing the pump replacement on my 96, but my warranty has unfortunatly expired. No hard feelings now. Enjoy, Bryan Pendleton http://members.tripod.com/~bryan_pendleton/index.html >

Ok another question how much is this damn pump going to cost I am figuring it will be over priced as everything else is for our car. Also do you know if you can get the pump at mazda any cheaper then ford.

my probe had 25000 miles on it when it started ticking, it was a tick that would go faster as the engine ran faster, but it wasn't there all the time. i took it to the ford dealership, and after a HUGE runaround with them they finally took it in. turns out it was a bad valve, i didn't get the details on whether or not it was an intake or exhaust valve. joe knight 97 bone stock

Ok, I have a 93' SE and I have had the problem arise twice in one year. Both times came during cold weather. What I did was had a oil change and used Mobil 1 5w30 Synthetic and the problem went away. The engine sounds great! I suggest you do the same thing I did. And if it doesn't go away then I don't know what to tell ya. Hey does any one have that part # for the oil pump for the 2.0 probe I went to my Ford place and they are wanting $245 for a new one and $240 for a rebuilt one so what was that part number and does any one think I can get it cheaper at a mazda dealer cause it does seem cheaper around here to get parts for the probe at a mazda dealer instead of Ford.
