I have a 97 T-Bird 5.0 with about 80k miles on it. Anyone know about when the timing belt should be changed ? And what would be a fair price ? Bruce

When was the 5.0 added, and how many miles were on it?

In that case... I had 280,000miles on my 94 4.6 before swapping it out for a 96 block with 02 heads/cams/intake and it had never been opened, nor was anything wrong. They are chains in our case and last as you can see a very long time. :) I know many more people with the same or more mileage that have never opened the engine either. A few people I've heard of have had failures but that's very rare and the tensioners will make up for any very slight slack that might come up. You are looking at taking all the accessories off, the valve covers, the front cover etc etc, in other words several hundred dollars worth of labor. If you have the engine apart for another reason, you could replace them for piece of mind, but if not, it's rather expensive to replace a working part that has been tested for over 300,000 miles to still be within spec.

Ok Great to hear that it is a chain and not a belt. I have a older 300zx that has a belt, and needs replacing at 75000 miles, that was the reason behind my question. Glad to hear Ford is one up on that issue. Thanks for the info ShadowDragon. Bruce
