Hi Gang, My '66 (289, 2bbl, auto) has a recently rebuilt <by Holly> carb but I fear there is a problem. The idle mixture screws need to be turned WAY out for a proper idle; Way out as in five or six full turns! Also, the engine leans-out at moderate- to-large throttle openings. that's no fun at all. This all smacks of a fuel starvation problem. However, I have verified adequate delivery of fuel to the carb and at an acceptable pressure. Have you other ideas, short of removing the 'new' carb and exchanging it for another? What am I missing here? Thanks. Rick '66

Check the choke...if the choke isn't opening at operating temperature the car will bog and idle erraticly...It might be the only thing opening the choke is engine vacuum, and speaking of vacuum if you have any vacuum leaks it will be tuff to set a consistent idle...a loose hose or uncapped port is a huge leak in the world of vacuum...Here's a test to check the carb: remove the carb-disconnect the throttle cable (it pulls off), disconnect the fuel line and other hoses (easy) don't need to replace the gasket unless its obviously shorn (there's one vacuum check there)-loosen your thermostat spring until the choke is wide open...tighten the thermostat spring...put the carb in the freezer for a few hours or overnite...when you check the choke it should be almost completely closed...look in your manual for how closed it should be...you can check say 3/16 with a like size drill bit... Make the adjustments in the spring to make your choke close correctly...if you do this right away let the carb thaw for a few hours...the choke should open significantly...put it back in the feezer again...it should close to the 3/16 or whatever you set it to...if this does not happen perhaps a new thermostat spring is in order, but this is rare... -- On Mon, 4 Feb 2002 08:10:25
