I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I am planning on buying a new F250 within a week and want to make sure I can tow enough. The vehicle I'm planning on ordering is a F-250 4x2 Super Cab with a 5.4 liter V8 with a 4.10 rear end, 5 speed TorqShift and towcommand, with a 12.5 K hitch. I am planning on conventionally towing a 6000 to 7000 lb. travel trailer. My question is, will this be sufficient to tow that much weight thru the West with our hills and passes or do I need to go to the diesel? The stated capacity for this truck is 10,800 lb. I realize that all the manufacturers overstate the towing capacity, but I want to make sure that I won't be "dogging" it down too much trying to tow with this combination. Any opinions from this group would be appreciated. John, Vancouver, WA

my dad has a f250 super duty crew cab 4x2 with a 5.4 and pulls a 3 horse goose neck trailer and he has had a problem when going up medium to large hills the compression or somthing has caused the one spark plug to blow right out of the threads on the head and the treads are so bad now that if it happens again the entire head will nead to be replaced so he has been using my f250 4x4 with a V-10  with the same gear ratio and has been getting the same milage when pulling the trailer.   hope that helps

I have a 2003 with a 6.0 (yes the first year of the new motor) and I have a 4 horse trailer and at one time was pulling 4 horses, one of them being 2000# by himself, the others around 800-1000#.  I dont ususallly know they are back there.  I never bog down on hills.  I set the cruise and go.  I average 12mpg, unless bucking a headwind, then will drop down into 11 or so.  My last truck was a 460 and even the second motor wasnt right.  I think there will always be a problem with the 460.  Something to think of is that the motor on the diesel has a 100,000 mile warrenty on it.  We do have a couple problems but they are due to cold.  I can bet your average winter temps arent -20F, tho, so I dont think you would have to worry about it.  But Ford is updating.  I did get a new part that is supposed to take care of our winter problems, but since it hasnt been cold yet, dont know if it will work. oh... my truck is a f350 4x4 4DR doooley gives you something to think about, anyway Jenny~~  ne MN ~~ where we have snow this morning to play
