This may sound familiar to some of you but I was looking for a little advise. I have a 3.03 tranny and it will not stay in reverse at all. I have been driving it around and all other gears are great. It will go into reverse but will "pop" out(more like grind out) of the reverse gear. The problem I have is my mechanic want to put a whole new tranny in rather then just fix the problem. At $1000 Canadian plus labour I am having second thoughts. Has anyone had this problem? If so can I just fix the reverse at a cheaper cost. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Make sure its totally in reverse.Maybe the linkage is out of adjustment.Remove the reverse/first shift rod and manually fully engage reverse then carefully drive backwards in a field and see if it still pops out.If so,its gonna need work.I would look for a used tranny instead.

I don't know if it is not going all the way in or not. Do you think that it is possible to have the rod too far where the gears are too far engaged? I have mine cranked all the way to the end but it looks as though it was broken and welded so I don't know if it is adjusted all the way. I guess I figure that I have to do some tranny work. Is it possible to just rework the 1st and reverse gears instead of the whole tranny? I am assuming that they are on the same shaft inside the tranny.
