Ryan, Sounds like it's stuck in forward gears, if so the one-way clutch is probably broken. I recommend buying a low mileage used one. You could use the yellow pages to locate a salvage yard or try locating a rebuilder in your area that would rebuild yours after you take it out.

I would either go to the boneyard and picked one out of a wrecked car. Reason for this, you know the car was running when it got hit. If you decide to get it rebuilt, make sure it is a reputable shop that does it!!!!!!!!!!!! Lot of places will slap them together just enough to get by!!!!!!!   With regards,              Matt

The 5 speed has had some problems with shifting and getting it into first and rev. A simple fix is to replace the tranny oil with some syn. oil. I have talked to many probers about this and they told me that the syn. oil would help out a lot. But if you are having a problem with your tranny popping gears then you should have it check out! i hate that too .. reverse is a pain .. sometimes it won't go in unless i slightly let off the clutch and then throw the clutch back in ... i'd like to just rip out the tranny, take it apart, and clean it all up .. would this be reasonable? or should i just check the filter (there's one in there right?) and replace the fluid? i'm not an auto-mechanic, but wouldn't mind bein one .. so any advice would be greatly appreciated. abe 93 pse

As far as I know they are the same(Ford 3.03),the only difference would be 2wd vs 4wd trannys and divorced transfercases. Cast iron and almost bulletproof.

My normal answer to this is find a used transmission. But the Ford AOD trannys from the mid 80's to the late 90's have been real crap. Anything you might find in a junk yard might not be very far away from what you have now (Same is true for early 90's Maximas). But I REALLY distrust tranny shops. I've NEVER seen a shop rebuilt tranny last more then 15K miles. I've known people who've rebuilt their own and it's lasted, but they replaced just about EVERYTHING and it cost damn near what a shop would've charged. The difference is the owner replaced everything whether they though it needed it or not, shops usually just replace a the bare minimum to get the job out the door. Don't know that this message will do you any good. It's just my thought for the day. I'm just glad that when I bought my '88 cargo in '99 for $500 it came with a dealer replaced AOD tranny already in it. I've got 40K on it since I bought it and it still works great.

Sounds fun, I just swaped my AOD out for a worldclass T5. It was an all day event, but it was kinda fun. It is a whole nother world with a manual. I hope you like the C4.<br>50_boy

I have had good luck with mine and am now installing the B&M trans cooler rated for 24000 GVW from Summit racing for $50. The only thing that I wish could be changed is the 1-2 shift for normal driving, it snaps hard and it can be annoying on long drives until you get used to it. Taryn 95GT Convertible
