1991 Aerostar XL 4.0 The transmission just went out on my van. Reverse works, but there's no drive functionality. In anyone's experience, is this worth replacing or am I just getting into a money pit? The rest of the van seems to be OK, just replaced the shocks, brakes, and tires. Someone mentioned something about CV joints. Are these expensive to get replaced? What else may go wrong w/a 15 year old vehicle? Should I consider buying a newer van and scrapping this one? I would rather get this one fixed if it doesn't lead to more major repairs. Thanks, John

The rest of the van > seems to be OK, just replaced the shocks, brakes, and tires it's worth taking the pan off the bottom of the transmission, checking for particles or broken band parts, and seeing if the trans filter is clogged. > > Someone mentioned something about CV joints. Are these expensive to > get replaced? Is your an All wheel drive? depending on the discount you get, they are 120 to 180 us each. Not hard to replace if you've done front end work. Very difficult and dangerous to do if you have never taken apart balljoints and so on. Take it to a shop. note- if it's only making the clack sound a bit when making sharp low speed turns and giving it gas, they'll last for a while if you don't abuse it. Or could break next week if you peel rubber with wheels cranked to side.
