I just changed the filter and fluid in my C4 and now it won't shift right. Prior to changing the fluid it worked great. Now, it seems to not down shift after I come to a stop and when I get on it it slips when shifting from one gear to the next. When I took down the pan and filter a spring and a short pin fell out. I reinstalled the filter, spring and the pin how I could best tell it went in (spring first then the pin with the point inside the spring). Did I have do something wrong there? It also blew a lot of tranny fluid out the breather on the adapter for the transfercase when I was test driving it. Any thoughts on why that happened? Thanks for any info, Greg

I can't tell you about a site, but I can tell you if you haven't yet, put a cooler on your transmission. I know a transmission guy and he told me that the most common failures are from clogged coolers and transmission overheating. The coolers are undersized and people do not flush the tranny as often as necessary.   You can look back in the archives here for information on installation of the cooler and tranny flushing problems.   If your vehicle takes a second or two to go into gear, but isn't really slipping then it is most likely the fluid. If it goes into gear fine, but then slips under pressure, it is the torque converter. Remember, at about 80k (or higher) replace the rear end fluid too. Some may never need changing, but some do..   CR
I was wondering if anyone may be able to direct me towards a site or
anything that could let me know information about common Transmission
Failures in the early year Explorers?

Thanks

I have a 94 2 wheel drive and it had started eating fluid. About every two months I have to put another quart in. The symptom is slow shifting into gear.   Any Ideas where the fluid is going?   It does not leave a spot on the driveway

James, This is common with high pressure leaks. They only leak when the vehicle is under power or high power. What is required here is to look under the vehicle and see if there is any splatter area. The front most point is where the leak probably is. The other possibility is that it is spraying on the exhaust which will burn off the fluid with only smoke and leave little/no splatter area.   Common leak points are; from the lines leading from the transmission to the trans cooler. The transmission pan itself The rear seal (where the drive shaft goes into the tranny)   If your car is dirty enough that you cant tell, take it to a car wash and spray the bottom of it off real well, then inspect the car when you get home. The problem with leakage that small is finding it. You can always get the eagle brand (I think it is eagle) transmission conditioner/stop leak. I've seen it work.   Let us know what you find. It is important so others can troubleshoot their own vehicles.   CR

I am going to work on that this weekend. I took a look under there and the connections to the cooler seem wet. So that will be my first point to attack. I will let you all know how it goes.
