I have a 1987 F150 4x4 XLT, 351 with automatic. Yesterday, while
driving downtown, the truck suddenly acted as though I was putting
on the brakes.
After pulling over and checking things out, I finally diagnosed that
it was the transmission. Currently, I can shift from Park, through
Reverse, Neutral and all the drive gears, and the transmission
shifts right into gear. However, it only moves the truck properly
in reverse and low. If I put the truck in Drive, it drives fine
until it shifts into the second gear, where it starts dragging
again. If I shift the truck in to low, it drives just fine.
Fluid level is up, but the fluid is brown. No unusual smells coming
out of the fill tube, or any smoke.
Any ideas? I am hoping to avoid a transmission replacement if
possible.
Thanks
