Hello all,
I have a 1990 2.3L Mustang LX which I am looking to upgrade, but there
are a few questions I have at this point.
First of all, how difficult is it to convert a stock 2.3L to the turbo
model using parts from an original 1990 Mustang 2.3L turbo? Has
anyone done this yet with success? Other than a new ECU, compressor,
exhaust manifold, belts and tubing, what kind of parts will I be
looking at?
If the turbo option is too much of a pain, I was looking at the
stroker kit from Ford Motorsports (p/n M-6000-A25), given my
experience rebuilding 1.8L Chevy Luv pups. Again, any comments here
and numbers on HP? I'm aware that strokers and turbos don't work well
together, so I was only looking at it as an alternate to turbos, not a
compliment.
Lastly, the big question: heads. I've seen a few people advertise "D"
port heads for the '90 2.3L engine. Are these speced for turbo
applications only, or will they work for a N-A engine, too? If work
is needed to bring the compression up to spec, that's a non-issue,
since I was thinking of bringing my compression ratio up from 9.0:1 to
either 9.5:1 or 10:1 given my tendency to run 93/94 octane fuel.
Even more interesting, I've seen a 4-valve head available for the
1984-1986 2.3L SVO turbo. If possible, I'd like to grab these heads
(and the manifold and cam) off one of these beasts and toss it into my
1990. Any luck, or am I stuck going no farther back than 1989
engines? Anything else out there that I can grab multivalve EFI
system from?
Thanks in advance.
