No sweat. I'm actually in the middle of writing up a "how-to"
article, 'cause the ones I got off stangnet.com and mustangworld.com
didn't give me all the tips I needed.
Well, the biggest most helpful hints I have are,
#1: When removing the crankshaft pulley bolt (sometimes it's in there
pretty tight), put your car in 5th gear to prevent it from rolling.
On my friend's '01 Cobra, we orginally had it in 1st gear, and we
kept making the car roll... It was funny, but annoying - we couldn't
get the bolt out.
#2: Make SURE that once you remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, you
also remove the thick washer that goes with it (you might need to pry
it off with a flat-head screwdriver). The first mistake we made (the
first time we tried this) was we didn't remove that washer, and we
tried for HOURS to get the pulley off, and it wouldn't come (this was
on my '00 GT). We found that it was because of that washer. After
removing it on our 2nd attempt, the whole job took 30 minutes from
start to finish.
#3: When installing the new crankshaft pulley, use the black silicon
sealant. It's less than $2.00 at Kragen I believe...
#4: And while you're there, pick up a harmonic balancer puller (or
borrow one from somebody). You HAVE TO have this.
#5: Rent or Borrow an impact gun (we used an electric one and it
worked like a champ!!) This will be used for the alternator pulley.
If you have an automatic, you will need it for the crankshaft pulley
as well. Make sure you get a 'gun' that does it from the side (looks
kinda like a fat torwue-wrench), otherwise you won't be able to get
to it.
Hopefully I'll get that "how-to" written up soon. I'll post it on my
website when it's finished. The site's down at the moment, but will
be back up shortly.
