I have not thought to check the vacuum hoses... (I hope none of you think any less of me for it... I'm new to all this engine stuff, but it's fun!) But as far as the manifold seal, wouldn't the WD40 test have made the idle change? When I put the cap and rotor in, I do not believe that I moved the distributor at all, but if that may have thrown the timing off somehow, I will call upon the help of a buddy of mine to oversee my attempt to check that. And I'm not entirely sure what you mean by using the hose to listen for sucking sounds... Again, wouldn't the WD40 have found it? Regardless! Black Thunder, you are the first to respond to my plea's for guidance and I thank you! Tonight I will try all of the things you have suggested.
Is it very tough to trace vacume lines? And by chance does anyone know how many I should be checking?
Again I thank you much!!!

you use the hose like a stethaskope the thingy the doctor listens to your heart with use a garden hose piece like 12" long never heard of the wd40 test so can't help you there. if you loosend the retaining nut on teh bottom of the distributer you could have moved the timing but if you only took off the cap and rotor you would not have touched that but you said you pulled the intake manifold off so I figured you loosened the distributer

quick question where do you live my car club is always looking for new members look up NETCOA on this same message/ club system on yahoo.

Later

Use the hose as a stethescope, like doctors do. Also, WD-40 would have changed the idle drasticly if there was a leak. You should really try the MAF sensor. At least, give it a look.
