Has anyone here successfully driven entirely on vegetable oil? I have an old banger I'm willing to give it a try on.

I've never heard of the idea of driving with only veg oil unless it was some special built vehicle to operate on the stuff. Let us know if you do try and how it worked out.

I've read about needing some kind of easy modification you can do to diesel engines. Is this what you're trying, GreenMoo?

You can have a conversion which will allow you to run on purely veg oil. But my understanding is that you can normally get away with running a normal diesel engine on it without modification, providing you aren't expecting it to last too long & don't mind smelling like a deep fat fryer!! I have friends who buy wrecks & run them into the ground this way.

I have never tried it but have heard that it can be done. Let us know if you attempt it and how it goes.

Here's a UK site which explains the mechanics of driving on pure veg oil fairly well - http://www.biomotors.co.uk/

Personally, no I havn't. Up the road from me however there is an old hippy lady who drives a car on 100% vegtable oil. I havn't spoke to her about it but it's well known locally. Everytime she drives past there's a smell of chips. Quite nice actually. It is indeed possible.

My father in law buys vegetable oil and adds it to his fuel, I am not sure of the proportions, but he has been doing it for a couple of years without any obvious problems. I have not been brave enough to try it.

Any idea if your father in law has done any modifications to his engine Justontime? I'd be interested to know if he can add a certain percentage before it starts to damage his car.

He hasn't had any modifications to his car, he has been doing it for a couple of years with no obvious ill effects. I will ask him what proportions he uses and let you know.

I heard that your cars engine will rust if you put some vegetable oils in them. I think that if ever your planning to run your car on it, you should do some modifications before putting the vegetable oils.

I think rusting is the last thing they'd do chocoguy, as the oil would coat parts & protect from the air and water which casue rust. However, some rubber parts can deteriorate so you're right in saying that modifications should be done if you're intending to run and keep a vehicle on veg oil.

I asked my father in law about this. His car is a newish diesel (Vauxhall Astra only a couple of years old) with an engine of the common rail type. He has had no modifications but he says he can use a mix of 25% vegetable oil to 75% diesel. He has been doing this for a couple of years. His brother's older diesel car is not a common rail diesel engine and he gets away with a greater percentage of vegetable oil. I would not recommend this, I agree with all those who say you should check with your mechanic and get modifications. I don't know how the do it yourself method would get it to mix properly and it would be hard to be sure you were accurate with the amounts. A car is too big an investment to take chances like that.
