It runs hotter than mine, Robin - do what I suggested -  only cost you a little time. george   On Wed, 27 Aug 2003 18:55:12 -0000 "Robin" <

It could also be as simple as a bad thermostat - could be sticking partially - could be rated higher temp than what stock was. Might consider replacing thermostat. They're relatively cheap. Only trick was I had to remove a mounting bolt from the fan belt tensioner I think and move it a little to get to one of the thermostat housing bolts on my 92. Other than that - a very simple job.

Thank you for the answer, the was the first thing that I did. Thermostat then flush to radiator but like I said I think that the temperature gauge doesnt work properly at least it doesnt reach the red area so I ll be ok. thanks. Robin

You're right I missed you saying you replaced the thermostat, but there was another guy on this board a few months ago that was having erratic swings in his temp guage and I think he replaced the thermostat beforehand, too. But with a cheap unit, and someone else suggested he use the Ford thermostat because some of the aftermarket ones are really cheap. They don't open and close as consistently as the Ford part. I'm not saying they're all bad, but some are. Someone else on this board said they had to "burp" the coolant system for some time to get trapped air out after changing coolant. The temp guage itself is the LAST thing I would suspect. Something else is driving it. >

Hello fellow Ford  enthusiasts,   I am currently out of commission with my vehicle because it simply will not turn over.  It ran fine one day while going to work and when I got in it to go to lunch the thing would not turn over at all....I just got the clicking sound.  I received a jump start from a friend and ran it home that evening.  I figured it would have charged up from the 20 mile trip, but as soon as I got home I shut it down and went to restart and it didn't even try to turn over.  Is this indefinitely my alternator?  If so, how would I test it out?  Or can a battery get old enough that it simply does not hold a charge?  I appreciate anyone's expertise because it will help me troubleshoot and get back on the road again!  Thanks so much for your time and help!   Chris Werdebaugh

it could be an "ancient" battery (or one that got drained one too many times), but unless you need jumps fairly regularly I'd say it's the alt. Have you ever had similar problems before? Also, did you notice a lack of power when driving, like dimmer lights? I am definitely no expert here but i do know that if it was to be your alternator you would get warning signs.  Think back and try to recall if you had a loss of power or if your lights would dim  or if you drove at night they may not have been as bright.  I have had a lot of problems with alternators so that's all i can say as far as that.

Also one more thing, if you are near an Auto Zone or Parts America store they will usually check batteries, alternators, and check engine lights free

No..it really hasn't happened before at all and I did not notice a difference in the lights as far as being any dimmer.   Chris Werdebaugh

Please be advised, use the following instructions with care.   Jump the vehicle off and get it started. Remove the battery cable (positive) and if the vehicle dies, the alternator is bad.   Get a meter when the vehicle is not running and put it across the battery terminal. Anything less then 13V (yes a 12V battery actually reads 13V) is a bad battery.     Chris Robertson

What my friendly AAA dude told me is this: if it were your alternator, you wouldn't hear the click.  Yes, a battery can get to the point it doesn't hold a charge.  I recommend Sears.  They won't screw with you and try and get you to buy more battery than you need. At least they didn't with me.  LOL

I have had to replace the battery twice in my exploder over the last 3 and a half years. Take it to an Auto Zone and have them test the ALT and battery.
