My 97 TBird developed a problem that it will not idle. Just started doing it. Being cold or warm has no affect. Otherwise, it seems to run ok. It will just die if you don't hold the rpms up. (above 500 rpm ) Even when costing, it will die. Makes it kind of dangerous, as I have to give it gas, while braking. Any suggestions ? Bruce

Hello, This pretty much reinforces what Mr. Smith said in his reply. Definitely have your IAC (idle air control) checked. Your Bird should be idling somewhere around 650 rpms minimum. Also check to see if the positive cable on your altenator is melting or getting hot (altenator drawing too much current because of the low rpms). Had the same problem a few months ago. Replace the IAC and had the injectors cleaned, runs great now. El

Thanks, to the two of you. When you had your problem, did it happen suddenly ? I just put gas in it about 35 miles ago, and was suspecting the gas. But, I also think if it was the gas, it would show up at other speeds. ??? I will check the Alt and charger. Then to a shop for the IAC, and other thing mentioned checked. Bruce

Don't know if you have replaced to TPS yet, to me it sounds like the TPS ( throttle position sensor ) if you have an Auto Zone near you buy the TPS & replace it, be very careful doing it, cuz if that does not cure the problem you can return it & get a refund in some cases or get credit towards other merchandise.I did that & the TPS was not it I returned it & got the Mass Air Flow Sensor & that cured the HIGH idle problem & yes it did happen all of a sudden. I was driving, coasting to a stop when all of a sudden the Bird just took off by itself and almost rear ended the car in front of me, scared the daylights out of me.If in case it is the mass airflow sensor make sure you install it in the oposite position of the original, otherwise the problem will not change. Good luk. Snowden

To put this thread to rest. The problem was the idle air control valve. Bruce > My 97 TBird developed a problem that it will not idle. Just started > doing it. Being cold or warm has no affect.
